• Due to their high status, Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom chose to visit Muckross House and stayed for two nights in 1861. This visit is one of the most historically significant events associated with the estate.
• In preparation for the royal visit (starting in the 1850s), the Herberts undertook extensive renovations and redecorations, investing over £30,000 at the time — equivalent to several million pounds today — all to impress the Queen.
• However, only months after the visit, Prince Albert, Queen Victoria’s husband, passed away. The Queen fell into deep mourning and did not grant any royal honors or recognition to the Herbert family, as they had hoped.
• The lavish spending placed a heavy financial burden on the family, which eventually led to financial difficulties and the sale of the house and estate in later years.
